Most states have legislation giving intellectually disabled adults the same protection Down syndrome teen Guardianship Boards. How can parents and providers help teens and young adults with Down syndrome transition into adulthood? The parents are invaluable sources of information about the child and, after several years of hard work, will have become staunch advocates and "bureaucracy-busters". People with Down's syndrome are part of our community and as such are part of the GP's patient population. Although Down syndrome teen should have been prepared for the diagnosis of Down's syndrome before the test took place, even the best pre-test counselling does little to offset the shock of an unexpected diagnosis.
